Maintaining one’s life with God is building a close relationship with God and strongly maintaining one’s faith in Christ. It is to be intentional about growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ who stimulates our spiritual growth. It is about living one’s daily life in faith. Maintaining one’s life with God requires, building oneself up on faith, praying in the Holy Sprit, keeping oneself in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life and having compassion on others. (Jude 20-22)

To build oneself up on faith and grow spiritually is to commend oneself to God and faithfully entrust one’s life to the guidance of the revealed word of His grace. The word of His grace is the foundation upon which the gift of grace that motivates faith in Christ into action was received. The word of His grace sustains one to be steadfast and continue to grow in the understanding of God’s love and practically apply the love to reflect God’s grace and character in one’s daily living. When one grow spiritually, one becomes God’s true image (Jesus Christ) with human capacity for morality, love and self awareness.

Praying in the Holy Spirit is to pray under the guidance and influence of the Holy Spirit. Praying to God brings one into deep connection with Him while relying on the Holy Spirit shapes one’s desire according to the will of God. The Bible tells us that it is the Spirit of God that knows the mind of God. (1 Cor.2:11) and says further that the Holy Spirit intercedes and helps believer to pray without groaning when the believer is weak and does not know what he should pray for. (Rom.8:26) Praying to God also expresses one’s faith in Him that He is worthy, able, and that He will answer one’s prayer. Praying in the Spirit truly enables one to maintain one’s life with God.

Consistently seeking God’s mercy helps in maintaining one’s life in God. Knowing that it is God’s grace that produces the mercy that saves from the judgement for sin against God. Mercy steps in and triumph over judgement because of God’s grace. Therefore, one must keep looking forward to the mercy of God which is available upon acknowledging sin of erroneous life conduct and confess it to God. The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleans us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John.1:9) Cleansing one’s sin bring forgiveness that makes one looks good and without condemnation in the sight of God.

The hope of eternal life also helps one in maintaining life with God. The act of patience and humility in the hope of eternal life helps believer to be able to submit to the will of God with patience and humility. And it is through the spirit of submission that God is able to mould the character of those that obey for eternal life. The effort to submit to God with patience and humility encourages one to live faithfully while waiting for God’s promises or waiting for God’s intervention during complex situation, without seeking for help where there is none.

Having compassion on others through forgiveness is one other means of maintaining one’s life with God. Forgiving others of sin signifies our faithfulness to God as we fulfil our declaration in our prayers to Him to forgive us as we forgive others. (Matt.6:12) It is important also to exercise mercy towards those who sins against us because God will deliver judgement without mercy on those who have shown no mercy on others. (James.2:13)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, maintaining your life with God requires spiritual growth in Christ and exercising love and compassion towards others. Developing your spiritual growth lies on your personal intention while the activity for growth lies within God’s grace.

Shalom
